Stewardship -
Our Duty to Animals
and the Environment
"When we heal the earth, we heal ourselves." - David Orr
Webster’s Dictionary defines a steward as, "one who acts as a supervisor or administrator, as of finances and property, for another or others." We arethe stewards of the earth. We don't own the environment, we are part of it. And because of our unique taxonomic position, we have the ability and the duty to look after it. It's like being a good big brother - we don't use that power to oppress the little ones, we use it to help and protect them.
As with everything else in human life, the degree to which we each embrace our stewardship responsibilities varies greatly. In truth, it varies with each of us on a daily basis. Again the concept of starting where you are comes up. We can't all start out being Julia Butterfly Hill, living in a tree for 738 days. But we can start out! We can protect and defend the land and animals in our little corner of the world to the best of our abilities.
The Earth and the animals are our friends. Let's look out for our friends.
