Pets
"Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened."
- Anatole France
Our pets are part of our families. That's just the way it is. People and animals have been living together domestically for thousands of years. Pets have been companions, workers, and dear friends. Some lucky people even find soul mates. One of our editors writes:
My dog, Jack, was the best friend I ever had. I picked him out of a box of puppies in San Clemente, in 1987. I was 27 years old. We were together for almost 17 years. We had some wonderful times together, but some of those years were also some of the hardest of my life. I wouldn't have gotten through them without Jack. I'm sure of that. I think of him everyday. I can see him running at the speed of light across the grass at the park, sitting in the seat next to me while we drove (buckled in, of course), turning his back to me because he knew I was going to work, waiting at the front door for me to come home. We drove across country together. We got into and out of relationships together. We grew up together. He was my best friend. He was my family. I waffle about religion; I don't know what I believe. What I do know is that Jack was no accident, no random accumulation of parts. He was a gift from God, or the gods, or the universe - whatever you choose to call the force responsibile for beauty and goodness. And when I think of the possibility of heaven, I think of Jack, speeding across a perfect field of green grass, straight toward me.
What else is there to say?
