Our Carbon Footprints
"We have forgotten how to be good guests, how to walk lightly on the earth as its other creatures do."
- Barbara Ward
Your Carbon Footprint is the measure of the impact your activities have on the environment, in terms of the amount of green house gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide (CO2). What you do, and what you use adds up to the amount of carbon dioxide (a greenhouse gas) you create. Greenhouse gases are directly responsible for global warming.
When you drive a car, the engine burns fuel which creates a certain amount of CO2, depending on its fuel consumption. When you heat your house with oil, gas or coal, then you also generate CO2. Even if you heat your house with electricity, the plant that created the electrical power may also have emitted a certain amount of CO2. Even the production of the food and other goods we buy emits some quantities of CO2.
Your carbon footprint is a very powerful tool for understanding the impact of personal behavior on global warming. Most people are shocked when they see the amount of CO2 their activities create! If you want to help stop global warming, start by calculating and monitoring your own carbon footprint.
