Nobody's Perfect
- Start Anyway!
"We have to start somewhere."
- Howard Berman
Getting started is a problem. I have it. My friends have it. It's way of life for some people - they have so many things they would like to have done, but very few that they have actually done. There is a way to solve this, and it's not what most people think. Here it is, here's the solution - stop stopping. That's it. Don't wait for the day when you have every single thing in place and you can jump in with perfect perfectness. Just start now. Put the aluminum can you have in your hand in a box when it's empty. Do the same thing with the next one. On your walk this afternoon, pick up the trash you see instead of commenting on it. Choose a salad instead of a hamburger tonight for dinner. If you want to be the perfect recycler, vegetarian, environmentalist - that's great. You have lots of time to read, research and practice. But that won't come first. What comes first is the little things.
Think of dieting - the prevailing wisdom is that none of these impulsive, cut out everything, only eat Post-its with fat-free dressing ever really work. What works is little changes, based on love for yourself. Same thing with healing the planet. Take little steps. Take hesitant steps. Take clumsy, awkward, even mistaken steps. Just take steps. OK?
