Fall means the end of the summer, back to school, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Cesar Chavez StampIt's the start of the new school year, and the beginnings of the Christmas holidays. It's also the season of Labor Day. The holiday began in 1882, when the Central Labor Union advocated for a day off for the "working man". An Act of Congress made it a federal holiday in 1894.

Most people know something about César Chávez (March 31, 1927 – April 23, 1993). He was a Mexican American farm worker, labor leader, and civil rights activist who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association, which later became the United Farm Workers. He is one of the greatest American civil rights leaders. But how many people know about Chávez the animal rights advocate? He was an ethical vegan and vocal advocate of animal rights. He is quoted as saying, "I feel very deeply about vegetarianism and the animal kingdom. It was my dog Boycott who led me to question the right of humans to eat other sentient beings." He also said, "Kindness and compassion towards all living beings is a mark of a civilized society. Racism, economic deprival, dog fighting and cock fighting, bullfighting and rodeos are all cut from the same defective fabric: violence. Only when we have become nonviolent towards all life will we have learned to live well ourselves."

Underscoring the Labor Day theme, NoraNora Karena's article, Let's Do the Smart Trade Spin, sheds light on the ongoing conversation about fair, free and smart trade. Don't miss the enlightening piece. Also, look for To Market, To Market in Noralina's Kitchen this month. Learn about this ancient form of commerce, and where to find markets in your own neighborhood.

Arlene CorwinI Was Thinking columnist Arlene Corwin weighs in on the topic this month with, Labor Just Sounds So...Laborious. She suggests a "karma" day instead instead of a "labor" day. We think it's a good idea. This year September also means Rosh Hashanah. Read Arlene's thoughts on the Jewish New Year, her heritage, and the human tribe in, Descending From....

As usual, Kyle Anne Bates provides the comic relief. Don't miss her special look at the work world in, Welcome to the Working Class.
