Gifts "The little things - they're not little." - John Zabat-Zinn We are fortunate enough to work with someone who is a great gift-giver. People comment all the time on how strangely gifted (no pun intended!) in this special art. What is it about Molly's gifts that are so unusually...right for the receiver? What it is is something that starts long before the event comes around We once watched as Molly, chatting at lunch with a friend, pulled out her date book and jotted something down. "What's that?", we all wanted to know. "Nothing, just a note I needed to make," she responded. We pressed her until she confessed. She had heard someone at the table talk about their love of dark chocolate. Molly pulled out her book, found the address of the person in question, and somewhere in that space found room to make a note about the chocolate. Sound a little compulsive? Well, it works. And it bears out one of the real truisms about gift giving - sure when that lucky recipient receives a gift of dark chocolate he'll be happy because he loves it, but he'll also get the gift of knowing Molly is a friend who really pays attention, who really cares to know him. We have decided, based on what we've learned from Molly, that gift giving is all about relationships. Just like so many things, it's about reaching out, making connections, caring. |
