Alternative
Energies
Going With the Flow
Simply stated, energy is the ability to do work.
The ability to harness sources of energy as safely
and economically as possible is one of the major,
if not the major, challenge of the 21st century. Alternativeenergy refers to energy source which
are not based on fossil fuels, or splitting
atoms. Byproducts from the burning of fossil fuels,
and nuclear waste endanger the Earth. Fortunately,
there are many ways to harness energy which have
minimal or no impact on the environment. Some possibilities of power sources include: the sun
(solar), the wind, heat and steam from the Earth's
core (geothermal), the tides, and water
(hydroelectric ), cold fusion, hydrogen, and
biomass (waste products).
88% percent of today's energy is produced by
facilities that burn fossil fuel. The environmental
effects - acid rain, pollution and global warming,
combined with the complex economic and political
problems associatedwith our dependence on fossil
fuels, urgently suggests that we invest our time and
money in alternatives.
